Cost of Obedience

Life has a funny way of leading us down roads we never planned to travel. We all dream, plan, strategize, and build visions for the future but sometimes, God has a different route in mind. A route that might seem unfamiliar, uncomfortable, or even controversial to others. That’s exactly what happened to me when I said yes to the call of the Lord. In that yes, it led me to a faith move to Detroit.

Let me be real with you, this move wasn’t exactly met with pomp and circumstance. It wasn’t widely celebrated, and it definitely wasn’t unanimously approved by many. Some folks questioned it, others side-eyed it, and a few quietly (or not so quietly) chose to distance themselves from me altogether. It would’ve been easy to shrink back, to question if I had misheard God, or to try to appease the voices around me and not go. But here’s the one thing this season has solidified in my spirit: Obedience to God doesn’t always come with the approval of others.

In fact, more often than not, obedience is met with silence, skepticism, or separation. But what I’ve come to understand is this: Peace isn’t found in the applause of people but is found in alignment with God’s will. That truth has become an anchor for me as I navigate my yes to God.

PURPOSE OVER POPULARITY

Walking in your calling doesn’t come with a fan club. It comes with sacrifice. It comes with pruning. It comes with moments where you feel like you’re walking alone. But purpose was never about popularity, it’s about impact. And impact often requires isolation.

Detroit, for me, isn’t just a change in geography. It’s a shift in spiritual posture. It’s a place where God is stretching me, molding me, and requiring more of me. This city represents more than a new zip code. It represents a new chapter, a deeper dependency on God, and a bold step into uncharted territory.

And let’s be honest…it ain’t easy! There are moments when I feel the weight of unfamiliarity, when I miss the comfort of what I knew, or when I wonder if the disapproval of others will turn into loneliness. But then I’m reminded: God never calls us to comfort; He calls us to obedience.

THE YES THAT COSTS

To the person reading this who’s wrestling with your own “yes”…have you thought maybe God is calling you to move, to start something new, to walk away from something familiar. Here is some encouragement: DO IT ANYWAY. SAY YES ANYWAY. GO ANYWAY. Do so even if it doesn’t make sense to those around you. Do so even if you don’t have all the answers. Do so even if the road ahead looks more like a wilderness than a promised land.

God honors the “yes” that costs you something. He honors the steps you take in faith, even when you’re shaking. He sees the tears, the misunderstandings, the sacrifices and He doesn’t take any of it lightly. Your obedience is building something eternal, even if it doesn’t make sense right now.

WALKING BOLDY IN MISUNDERSTOOD TERRITORY

I don’t know what your ”Detroit” is…maybe it’s a job, a ministry move, a relationship shift, or simply stepping out of a season that’s expired. But whatever it is, I want to encourage you to walk boldly into the unknown. Not because it’s easy. Not because it’s applauded. But because God is there.

This season has taught me that God’s approval is enough. That peace isn’t always the absence of conflict, it’s the presence of confidence in God’s direction. Sometimes walking in your purpose will require you to leave the crowd behind and follow the still small voice that’s been nudging you to go.

So here’s to obedience that costs. Here’s to callings that don’t always come with consensus. Here’s to walking boldly even when the path is misunderstood. And here’s to Detroit—a city I never imagined I’d call home, but one I know God is using to do something deep within me.
